Research
We began with conducting a contextual inquiry with participants—through a survey, directed storytelling, and a graffiti wall, we were able to gather meaningful insights that allowed us to move forward with our concept with direction and intention guided by our How Might We question and design principles.
Ideation
After our design opportunity was well defined, we started imagining design responses to address the opportunity/need that we observed—improving the lunchbox opening experience for minority children. We ideated and generated 60 ideas as responses to our How Might We question, and following our design principles.
Development
Our team chose and developed three further design concepts that fit our users' needs. Each concept is a different design intervention. The three concepts directly responded to our How Might We statements and built from our research insights and design principles.
Workshop
Our team organized and conducted a 90-minute-long participatory design workshop with two participants in our user demographic. Following Sanders' collection of tools and techniques for participatory design, we prepared activities that address Making, Telling, and Enacting. We organized our activities to gain more ideas on how to move forward in the design process. Our activities allowed for the participants to work with us at designing elements of our chosen design concepts.
Storyboard
We developed a storyboard to illustrate how our participants would use our design proposal. This allowed for our team to start discussing the details of the design concept we had proposed. After our storyboard, we met with our participants and gathered feedback about your final concept. The goal was to listen to how they perceived the concept in general, but also to find ways to improve and refine the experience of using our final design response. Our team prepared a list of questions around specific elements of the design we wanted to hear them talk about.
Final Steps
In order to prepare for our final poster deliverables, we hand crafted our products—the global goodies themselves and a lunchbox.
Reflection
Global Goodies was a very fulfilling project to work on, as it addressed a prevalent and real issue that resonated deeply with our team. Working closely with users and participant to gain insights was time well spent and taught us about the importance of listening closely to user feedback in the design process.
